Women’s College Basketball: No. 13 Iowa State defeats Texas Tech on the road, 86-65

LUBBOCK, TX – No. 13 Iowa State (18-3, 7-2 Big 12) stormed past Texas Tech (9-11, 2-7 Big 12), 86-65, for their 18th win of the season and fourth Big 12 road win. Texas Tech had no answer for Iowa State’s offense, which shot a season-high 55.2 percent from the floor and placed five in double figures.

Emily Ryan shined for Iowa State with her second 20-point outing of the season, totaling 20 points, seven assists and three boards. Lexi Donarski added 19 points, with Ashley Joens (16), Beatriz Jordão (11) and Nyamer Diew (10) rounding out the Cyclones in double figures.

Iowa State 18 wins in its first 21 games of the season, marks the first time the Cyclones have achieved the feat since the 2004-05 season.

How It Happened

Both Iowa State and Texas Tech seemingly could not miss in the first quarter, with both squads shooting over 60 percent from the field. Iowa State closed out the quarter with a narrow 24-22 lead over the Lady Raiders, thanks to a boost off the bench from Diew and Jordão. Diew tallied a team-high five points and Jordão chipped in four.

The Cyclones would gain some distance in the second quarter with strong play on both ends of the floor. Offensively, Iowa State outscored Texas Tech 20-12, going 7-of-13 from the field, while holding the Lady Raiders to just 5-of-16 shooting on the defensive end. Iowa State ended the half connecting on their last six field goals, three of which came from Ryan. However, it was Donarski who had the final say, going up-and-under to beat the buzzer to give the Cyclones a 10-point lead at the half, 44-34.

Iowa State would break the game wide open in the third quarter, totaling 29 points and holding TTU to just 15. The Cyclones would close the quarter on a 16-3 run with eight of ISU’s final 10 points coming from Donarski, who tallied 10 of her 19 in the third quarter alone. Iowa State’s 24-point lead (73-49) was too much for Texas Tech to overcome, with ISU cruising to an 86-65 win.
