Three Iowa children hurt when UTV rolls over in ditch

JESUP, IOWA – Three Iowa children were hurt when the UTV one of them was operating rolled over in a ditch.

On Saturday, October 16, 2021, at approximately 12:15 pm, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 report of a UTV accident with injuries in the 1300 block of 275th Street southeast of Jesup, Iowa. According to an investigation, a Polaris UTV operated by a 13-year-old female juvenile was traveling eastbound in the 1300 block of 275th Street when the juvenile lost control of the UTV. The UTV entered the north ditch and rolled over, coming to rest on its wheels.

The driver and two passengers, a 12-year-old female juvenile and a 9-year-old female juvenile, were not wearing safety belts and were thrown from the vehicle. The driver sustained minor injuries but did not require emergency transport. The 12-year-old and 9-year-old passengers were transported to an area hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Jesup Fire Department, Jesup Ambulance Service and AMR Ambulance Service.

  1. Parents that allow children to operate ATV and UTV should have to do at least 80 hours of community service.
