You may know Beth Royer from one of her signature catchphrases like, “What a hoot!” Or you may know Beth Royer from her (sometimes loud) joyous and warm laugh. In all honesty, there are a lot of ways you may know Beth Royer because she has been a committed member of the community for over 40+ years and has given all of us so much. It is with heavy hearts that we share our loss with you that Beth Royer passed away peacefully on August 8, 2020, following a ten year battle with Multiple Myeloma (Bone Marrow Cancer).
Elizabeth Lu Royer was born to Ruth and John Hoskin in Fort Dodge, Iowa on September 22, 1951. Beth has one older brother Rillman Hoskin. Beth attended Iowa Central for vocal music and finished her teaching degree at Buena Vista College with a minor in vocal music. Beth married Paul Royer on May 22, 1976, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Beth was born into a family of teachers and found herself to be a natural. Her first career was teaching 1st grade in Webster City, Iowa. She adored the children she taught and learned life-long lessons that she would apply to her second career, being a mother of four.
Paul and Beth have four children: a set of twins, Eric (Ericson) and Sarah (Muffy), Anna (Anna-Banana), and Luke (Lukers). All four children carried their nicknames into adulthood. Beth was crazy about her children and would go to great lengths to make sure they grew up to be loving towards each other and to others. Beth was always involved in her children’s lives and often served as a “surrogate” mother to her children’s friends.
Beth was an avid supporter of the arts. As mentioned earlier, Beth was interested in vocal music. She had raw talent and channeled her spirit through her beautiful soprano singing voice. She had many honors in vocal music throughout her life, like all-state, college scholarships, College Singers, musicals, etc. Beth joyfully sang with Charles City Singers and the Trinity United Methodist Church Choir for many, many years.
Beth would always tell stories of her Grandma Gawtry. Her grandma was a beacon of unconditional love and taught her how to love and care for others as a child. Later in her life, her husband, Paul Royer, taught Beth even more about unconditional love and trust. Beth said that Paul would encourage her to be the best version of herself that she could be. She would often refer to Paul as her best friend, her rock, and her “partner in crime.”
Beth is loved dearly by her family and close friends. Her legacy and spirit will live through her children: Ericson, Muffy, Anna-Banana, and Lukers; her husband Dr. Paul Royer; her grandbabies Elizabeth (Ellie) and Xander Koster, Rohanna Theogarajan, Marley, and Whit Royer; her In-Laws Jonas Koster (Sarah), Suzi Royer (Eric), Satish Theogarajan (Anna); her close friends Barb Smith, Alice Burress, and Ileen Jerdee. Beth adored so many people in the community and would have made this list easily 1,200 people. Please know that we know who you are.
In my Mom’s brightest moments, she could provide enough electricity for every house in the US. In my Mom’s darkest moments, she could remind you how painful life is for others and how finding humor in the dark moments can help ease the burden. She would want you to know that if you have received a cancer diagnosis and need the courage to fight, you can remember her, and she’ll be by your side.
Beth will be sorely missed and joyfully remembered. Due to COVID-19 concerns, we will only have a family-sized funeral, and there will not be a wake. We will celebrate her life when Covid-19 clears up.
