Iowa golf: East Team wins East-West team event

EAST MOLINE, IL – The East Team won East-West Team Event on Monday July 6, 2020 at Short Hills Country Club. Teams for East-West Team Event were comprised of 9 best balls gross, on each hole. The East team was led by Tracy Vest as they shot 57-under-par score of 591 to defeat the West Team.

The Section was divided into team members from the East and team members from the West. In addition to the team event, the Iowa PGA East-West Team Event featured individual competitions for the Open, Senior and Super Senior Divisions.

Vest of Blue Top Ridge claimed first place in the Open Division with a 4-under-par 68. Vest carded birdies on holes 2, 4, 9, 16 and 17 with a lone bogey on hole 11. Sean McCarty of Brown Deer GC, John Bermel of Pheasant Ridge GC and Darin Fisher of The Preserve on Rathbun Lake tied for runner-up in the Open Division. McCarty, Bermel and Fisher all carded 3-under-par scores of 69.

Bermel took home first place in the Senior Division with a 3-under-par 69. Bermel recorded birdies on holes 2, 4, 6, 10, 15 and 16 with bogeys on holes 8, 9 and 12 in route to his victory. There was a tie for runner-up between Jeffrey Schmid of Brown Deer GC and Judd Gibb of Lakeside Municipal GC carded scores of 2-under-par 70.

Mark Ruthey of Palmer Hills GC won the Super Senior Division with a 2-over-par round of 74. Ruthey carded bogeys on holes 1, 4, 10 and 12 with birdies on holes 14 and 15 in his win. Runner-up was Jim Henry of EK Golf and Larry Castagnoli, Life Member tied for second place as they carded rounds of 7-over-par 79.
