DUBUQUE – Libertarian candidate for U.S. Seante Dr. Doug Butzier passed away at the age of 59 on Monday October 13, 2014 in a plane crash near Dubuque, where two of his sons live.

His campaign website said “He will be sorely missed by family, his coworkers and friends.”

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the plane crash.

Butzier was born in Mt. Pleasant and grew up in Cedar Falls. He graduated from NUHS (Price Lab) in 1973 and graduated from the University of Iowa with a general science degree in 1980 and MD in 1984.

Polls indicate that Butzier had 2% of less of the possible vote in the race for the U.S. Senate. State Sen. Joni Ernst and Congressman Bruce Braley are neck and neck. The winner will replace Tom Harkin, who is retiring.

“I am deeply saddened to learn the tragic news about Dr. Doug Butzier. I appreciated Doug’s willingness to contribute to this important election. In addition to representing Libertarians in this campaign, Doug served his community as an ER doctor and medical leader. Gail and I will keep Doug’s family in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn their untimely loss,” Ernst said in a statement.

Braley also expressed his condolences to Butzier’s family.
