WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement today following an announcement by the White House that the United States will submit a proposal to the 2015 U.N. Climate Change Conference to cut greenhouse gas emissions up to 28 percent:

“The climate crisis is real and its impacts are already being felt in America and around the world. No nation can afford to deny the urgency of our circumstances, and our efforts to combat it must be immediate and innovative.

“This bold pledge to reduce U.S. carbon pollution, announced today by the Obama Administration, reaffirms American leadership in combating the climate crisis. Paired with policies to continue to advance clean power generation across America, such as the EPA’s upcoming Clean Power Plan, we know that this target can be as achievable as it is ambitious.

“All nations have a role to play in confronting the climate crisis. Other nations should also announce their carbon pollution reduction plans as soon as possible in advance of the COP21 negotiations. Only together can we secure a sustainable future for our children and our planet. With bold and united action, we can avert the worst effects of the climate crisis.”
