Georgia Hanford Park sledding hill

MASON CITY – Mason City’s Georgia Hanford Park sledding hill is now open.

Sledders are able to use the hill that is located in the southeast corner of Georgia Hanford Park, volunteer Ozzie Ohl reminded Wednesday.

Parking is available along South Georgia.

The sledding hill was increased in height this past year and is slightly longer than 250 feet. This sledding hill is ideal for elementary and middle school kids because there is a longer walking distance to get back to the sledding hill.

Lights are on a timer near the the hill and can be turned on.

The lights can be turned on at dusk and automatically turn off at 9 p.m.

Why a picture of East Park sledding hill (confusing) and Why would you use a picture where someone was hurt? Are you promoting the sledding hill or slamming it?

I remember back when “Taylor” hill was here, before the mcniders decided to build a house there and ruin it for hundreds of kids. Now that was a sledding hill and sure do miss it!!!

This sledding hill is a joke. You don’t go very far down the hill. Plus, who wants to walk that far and not have any fun. They had to make the hill higher because the rain washed the dirt away. This was Ozzie’s pipe dream made possible by the city’s yes man Bob Berggren. He paid city workers over time to put in the electricity for the light. What a waste of tax dollars.

      Matt published this in 2012:

“The sledding hill was created and excavated earlier this winter by McKiness Excavating. They did the entire sledding hill excavating project as a community donation from their company. Culver Hahn Electric provided wiring and electrical supplies and those were also a community donation. Jim Hunt Electric donated his services and set the pole. Mason City RentAll donated the use of a trenching machine for installing the electrical wiring. Scott Sweet from WHKS and WHKS designed the hill and donated their professional services.”

Notice the word ‘donated’ and ‘donation’ appears several times in the paragraph. Plus the article stated that Ohl raised private funds for the project.

It is true, the Parks Department is responsible for the upkeep of the facility, just like all other parks in the Community. And if you find the walk to the hill objectionable, why not raise more funds to build a closer parking. While you are at it, raise enough funds for a warming shelter.
