PELLA – The NIACC wrestling team crowned a pair of champions at the Central College Under Armour Invitational on Saturday.
NIACC’s Tony Mendoza (12-4) won the 149-pound gold division and the Trojans’ Mason Carpenter (2-1) was the 174-pound silver champion.
NIACC placed fifth in the team standings with 52.5 points. Host Central was the team champion with 136.5 points.
In the 149-pound gold title match, Mendoza took a 4-2 decision from Central’s Robert Areyano.
In the 174-pound silver title bout, Carpenter topped Zyire Ardoin-Dural (unattached), 3-1.
Also for the Trojans in the gold division on Saturday, Dakota Vance was third at 174 pounds and Brock Luthens was fourth at 133 pounds. The Trojans’ Reldon Miller and Holt Truax tied for fourth at 184 pounds as both advanced to the consolation match but did not wrestle each other.
In the silver division, NIACC’s Xavier Judge (157) and David Loeffler (184) placed third and Zach Andrews (149) was sixth.
NIACC returns to action Tuesday in an ICCAC dual meet at Iowa Lakes. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
