President Donald J. Trump nominates Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh for Supreme Court

BRETT M. KAVANAUGH
President Trump makes the big announcement Monday night.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Monday night, President Donald J. Trump announced his intent to nominate Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement, the White House reported.

“The nomination of Judge Kavanaugh comes after a selection process marked by a historic degree of transparency, including the President’s public disclosure of a list of 25 highly qualified potential nominees for the Supreme Court,” the White House said in a statement.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) tonight made the following comment on President Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Judge Kavanaugh is one of the most qualified Supreme Court nominees to come before the Senate. His credentials are well known, and he’s served with distinction as a judge on the esteemed D.C. Circuit for more than a decade. He is a superb mainstream candidate worthy of the Senate’s consideration,” Grassley said.

“As we have always done when reviewing nominees for lifetime-appointed judgeships, the Senate Judiciary Committee will conduct a fair and comprehensive evaluation of the nominee’s background and qualifications followed by hearings where we’ll hear directly from the nominee as we fulfill our advice and consent responsibility.”

Brett Kavanaugh currently serves as judge on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in Washington. He was confirmed for the judgeship in 2006 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.

Judge Kavanaugh previously served in the White House Counsel’s Office and then as the White House Staff Secretary under President Bush. He also served as Associate Counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel under Ken Starr.

Judge Kavanaugh received a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University in 1987 and then a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1990. He clerked for two federal appeals court judges and Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. He also worked in private practice in Washington, D.C.

Meanwhile, a prominent Iowa lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) organization – One Iowa – Urged Sen. Grassley to Reject Brett Kavanugh’s Nomination to the Supreme Court. One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel issued this statement following the nomination:

“President Trump’s clear disdain for an independent judiciary makes it crucial that the Senate confirm only a fair-minded constitutionalist who will keep the White House in check and protect the rights of LGBTQ people, people of color, women, and many others. “Kavanaugh does not meet that criteria, and in fact his record indicates he is quite the opposite. We urge Sen. Grassley to uphold his responsibility as Chair of the Judiciary Committee and not move forward with this nomination.”

Progress Iowa, a liberal Iowa political group, said, “Kavanaugh passed every litmus test instituted by Trump, from a commitment to overturn Roe v. Wade, taking away women’s rights, to undermining and overturning the Affordable Care Act and its health care protections for the 130 million Americans with a pre-existing condition. But Trump could have found a number of anti-woman, anti-health care nominee anywhere. With Kavanaugh, Trump gets someone who has argued that a sitting President should not be indicted. Let that sink in – President Trump is the subject of a criminal investigation, and he just nominated a potential Supreme Court justice who would prevent him from being indicted. This is serious, but it’s a fight we can win.”

Former President George W. Bush said, “President Trump has made an outstanding decision in nominating Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Brett is a brilliant jurist who has faithfully applied the Constitution and laws throughout his 12 years on the D.C. Circuit. He is a fine husband, father, and friend – and a man of the highest integrity. He will make a superb Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.”

Elizabeth Warren

Liberal Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren blasted the Presdient’s pick, saying, “You can count me as a NO vote. We already knew that Trump’s nominee would come from a list pre-screened by right-wing extremists, so make no mistake: Brett Kavanaugh was chosen because conservatives are confident that he would overturn Roe v. Wade. Brett Kavanaugh’s record as a judge and lawyer is crystal clear, and he would do even more damage on the Supreme Court: He opposed letting a young immigrant woman get prompt access to a legal abortion, and he’s argued that sitting Presidents should be exempt from lawsuits and criminal investigations or prosecution while in office – wouldn’t Donald Trump love that? And if that’s not enough, get this: He believes that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is unconstitutional, he tried to strike down net neutrality, and he’s worked to make it harder for federal watchdogs to hold corporate criminals accountable and protect public health, safety, and economic security. The stakes couldn’t be higher.”
