WEST DES MOINES – A park in this Des Moines suburb has been re-opened after officials were forced to close it for safety reasons connected to a riot and a powerful firearm left behind.

West Des Moines officials have reopened Crossroads Park, located at 5205 Ashworth Road. This closure went into effect Saturday afternoon and remained in effect through the weekend.

On Monday, police said that investigators have completed their work in the park, including an area search for things left behind after Friday evening’s apparent riot that involved up to 50 people. Responding officers that night found evidence of illegal drug use. They also found a loaded AK-47 rifle that was abandoned when officers arrived.

According to Sergeant Dan Wade, park closures like this are rare. “The City of West Des Moines did not take this decision lightly”, he said. “We don’t take safety lightly either. We needed this closure to give our people a chance to make sure the park was safe again. We appreciate the community’s patience and we will continue to monitor activity in the park.”
