MASON CITY – Mason City officials report they stopped discharging wastewater to the Winnebago River at 8 p.m. June 18.

The discharge was reported Friday after a sewer line collapsed in the 300 block of South Rhode Island Avenue. The city pumped the untreated wastewater to a storm sewer that flows into the river near the softball complex on Second St. NE.

The DNR recommends keeping children and pets away from the riverbanks near the discharge for the next 24 hours.

DNR plans to review the matter and consider appropriate enforcement action.

  1. Private businesses can do what they want but projects funded by public money need to adhere to a stricter standard of conduct, Public works has does wonders for this community and across the nation so hire some labors and give ’em shovels. This isn’t about profit for the abuse of public funds is all to apparent here and elsewhere. When money wasn’t in such great surplus this was how MC was built. By hardcore men who were the toast of the town. Ballbusters 101. lol

  2. That looks like about a $3,800 daily operation. Get some shovels and put your backs into it. It builds character and a trim physique. But it’s one guy in the tonka toy and 4 watching on any given dig nowadays.

    1. That tonka toy belongs to, McKiness Excavating, and guess what, they run their crews any way they want. So your comment isn’t worth squat.

  3. Rivers are ruined anyway from CAFOS, that’s why they don’t care they know they are “sewer” rivers, be good stewards to the land ha ha.
