Health Department warns residents of home care scam

MASON CITY – The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health would like to alert Cerro Gordo County residents of a home care scam. The health department and law enforcement have received reports involving a person going in to homes and stating that they are from the health department or human services office or that they are working with the health department.

The latest scam has reports of the individual asking to see medications and offering medical equipment, which may be harmful to the patient. Prescription medications have also been reported stolen.

“If you do not see a Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health vehicle with appropriate signage, you do not recognize the person, or the individual is unable to show you an official Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health name tag, please call us right away,” said Ron Osterholm, Health Director with the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health. “Do not give out any information or let the individual into your home until you have confirmed it is an employee with our Department.”

If you have any information regarding this individual or similar occurrences, contact your local law enforcement. For more information about our home care services, or to verify that one of our employees is at your home, please do not hesitate to contact us at 641-421-9300.
