Iowa marine killed in base accident

CAMP PENDLETON, CA — A decorated young marine from Iowa was killed Friday in an accident on the Camp Pendleton base in California.

Lance Cpl. Cody J. Haley, age 20, assigned to the 1st Marine Division, died as a result of an undisclosed accident on the base that happened on August 4.  Emergency medical personnel pronounced Haley deceased at the site of the accident, KUSI news reports, and the accident is under investigation.

Haley was from Hardin, Iowa, and graduated from South Hardin High School, according to the Iowa Falls Times-Citizen.

In a statement, officials at the base said “We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of a member of the Marine Corps. family, and we will do all we can to comfort the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.”

The San Diego Tribune reported that Haley deployed with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit in March of 2016. His awards include the National Defense Service medal, Global War on Terrorism Service medal, and the Sea Service Deployment ribbon.
