LOS ANGELES – Carrie Fisher – known for playing Princess Leia in several Star Wars films – has died at the age of 60.

Fisher had a heart attack on an airplane several days ago and was being treated in a Los Angeles hospital. Her mother, Debbie Reynolds, Tweeted on Christmas that “Carrie is in stable condition. If there is a change,we will share it. For all her fans & friends. I thank you for your prayers & good wishes.”

“Carrie holds such special place in the hearts of everyone at Lucasfilm it is difficult to think of a world without her,” said Disney’s Kathleen Kennedy, who helped produce the last movie Fisher was in – The Force Awakens, released in 2015. “She was Princess Leia to the world but a very special friend to all of us. She had an indomitable spirit, incredible wit, and a loving heart. Carrie also defined the female hero of our age over a generation ago. Her groundbreaking role as Princess Leia served as an inspiration of power and confidence for young girls everywhere. We will miss her dearly.”

Fisher skyrocketed to fame as the spunky Princess Leia in 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope”.  She picked up the role in three more “Star Wars” films. According to her website CarrieFisher.com, “Carrie reprises her role as Princess Leia in the return of the Star Wars Trilogy, Star Wars VIII coming to theatres December 2017.”
