MASON CITY – A fight between a group of men Wednesday night in a North End neighborhood rattled neighbors, who feel powerless to stop the drama.
Mason City police officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of North Delaware Avenue Wednesday night about 10 PM on a report of “a group of guys fighting”. At the scene, officers converged on foot and turned on flashlights, a witness tells NIT.
“As the police walked up they were not noticed until they shined their lights, one person decided to try to go into the house and was told three times not to,” the witness told NIT as the incident unfolded. “The person then proceeded to try to run after the renter of the house told him not to go in because then the officers could have reason to go in… as he got away another officer said ‘shoot him,’ … assuming tazer but poor choice of words.”
The witness further described the confrontation that night.
“Neighbors being loud for about an hour … heard breaking bottles, yelling and threats. All this was while they were trying to carry a conversation about one person being released from jail today and who he heard was working undercover with cops and feds.”
Then, allegedly, things got more heated.
“Another black (man) then began yelling at an officer … exclaiming ‘how would you like it if I shot you.’ Officer said ‘are you going to shoot me do you have a gun’ and the subject said ‘I don’t but I can get one.'”
The witness says this confrontation took place “as the other officer chased the (first) person around another house… he threw something… not sure if it was found.”
Eventually, multiple police officers, squad cars and an ambulance converged on the scene.
They searched for something and one person, our source said, was taken to jail.
Arrested was 25-year-old Todd Aaron Howard Hamilton Sutton, Jr. on charges of interference with official acts, public intoxication, and possession of a controlled substance. He remains in jail at this time.
A Mason City resident contacted NIT and said that the owner of one of the addresses in question, 1637 North Delaware, was called and asked to do something about the alleged on-going problems at his rental house.
“I was on phone with landlord (Jim Pike) who responded ‘it’s not my fault or responsibility don’t call me they pay their rent.'”
“The (small) house (has) two couples and 6 children.”
Mason City police attempted to pull over Todd Aaron Howard Hamilton Sutton, Jr., (formerly of Chicago) back on October 11, 2015. However, Sutton attempted to elude police. He was eventually caught and charged with eluding, driving while barred, no registration, no insurance, failure to obey a stop sign, and interference with official acts. Sutton, who already has a lengthy rap sheet in Mason City, pled guilty on August 8 to eluding and driving while barred. He was given 44 days in jail, total, and ordered to pay $925.25 in fines and court fees. He was also placed on probation for 2 years.
The mentally unstable people who live next door to me “pay their rent” too, Pike is their landlord, he could care less who he brings into family neighborhoods, as long as he gets his rent money…..2 couples and 6 kids in that 2 bedroom house?? That can’t possibly pose a problem. Those kids dart right out in the street too, someone is going to get hit, and its gonna be a shame.
There is a city ordinance against this type of stuff. Turn them in over and over again. Use “See, Click, Fix” on the Mason City web site. Call the police everytime there is a problem. If they get called out to the same address three times they will go after the landlord.
Been called way more then three times and still nothing has been done, open to advice.
Contact your council member or Brent Trout and ask why the ordinance is not being enforced.

This is the same landlord that owns the two houses on 8th SE that has had the same trouble, and the neighbors love it. “They pay their rent,” with tax payer money.
Didn’t he also beg the community for money for a prosthetic arm a few years ago? What a way of giving back!
Officers already had his drugs. The officer that caught him lost his flashlight in the scuffle. Other officers tried to help him find it while Todd was taken to the jail. I don’t believe the flashlight was found.

Need to check the nuisance codes; I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) landlords are to be held responsible for renters’ offenses…. ? Remember Chop/Eleven? The City made them close down because of the 1500 foot rule – does that not apply to landlords/tenants?
That is the way I understood law when they first implemented, it was to address residents and businesses that were a nuisance. They said landlords would be held accountable for nuisance at their rental properties if the police were called there three times.
This situation is happening here and all around us. This includes the city of Northwood where many have come in from Chicago also and we see 1 murder and a nice small town, not nice anymore. Land Lords don’t care “as long as they get the rent money.” Heard, don’t know if its true, that Chicago is paying to get these people OUT! Greety landlords collecting ? How many people and children are allowed to live in one dwelling? Does it matter? Are Social Services checking to make sure children are safe? Are they now taking all they can get from the state of Iowa? Yep. Now you have gangs, more drugs, constant street fights, and non-stop theft & violence. Thank all the wonderful landlords that don’t care about their neighbors!!! Thankful I don’t live around there.
Some people just do not have any class and they will ruin any neighborhood they come to. Why should a person fix up their property just to have some landlord rent to people that do not know how to act in society. I would guess the landlord doesn’t live in this neighborhood and if they were held financially liable to the rest of the neighborhood for having to live with this crap then I bet they would do a hell of a lot better job doing back checks.

Not really sure the color matters except for description, although I will say this even with people of color in my family all lives matter, even in books descriptions help to paint the picture. It matters how a person carries themself and tries to progress their lives and children’s lives for better.

The reason people care is because they are involved in crime of all sorts much more than any other color. If they acted like everyone else they would be treated accordingly.
Totally agree ! The number of people coming from Detroit Chicago St Louis The Cities etc. that have settled here and are wreaking havoc on our community, our welfare and criminal justice system. They sell the drugs, hook up with low self-esteem white women, have children and the cycle continues…it is a travesty !

I think Matt simply quoted his source and the real question is would the source have used the term white had the suspect been white? Obviously not. The source was white and the crime committed in a predominantly white area, this is why skin color was used in the description. If the crimescene had been an Illinois ghetto, the source black and the suspect white then skin color would also no doubt have been mentioned. What was the problem again?
