Three Iowans die in two-car crash

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash took place at 6:41 PM, June 30 on M Avenue near Highway 6 in Iowa county.

Renee Jones, age 40 of Williamsburg, Iowa was driving a Kia SUV with four passengers, northbound on M Avenue. Jones lost control of the vehicle and over-corrected, crossing the centerline. This led to the broadside impact with a southbound 2016 Toyota SUV driven by Kimberly Ann Stevenson, age 44, of Marengo.

Three persons inside the Kia were killed. Jones was injured. Cherokee Niemann, age 11 (Jones’ daughter) passed away. Also killed were Marilyn Coon, age 42 and her daughter, 12-year-old Hailey Kruse. A 9-year-old girl, Lana Coon (also Coon’s daughter) was hurt and taken by helicopter to University of Iowa Hospitals.

Stevenson was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, 181 people have died so far on Iowa roadways, an increase of 49 persons (37.12%) from 2015.
