Hampton woman says she is not guilty of inflicting serious injuries upon child

HAMPTON – A Hampton woman says she is not guilty of felony charges after law enforcement accused her of inflicting serious injuries upon a child.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department brought felony charges of willful injury causing serious injury and child endangerment causing serious injury against 27-year-old Jessica Mae Torres of Hampton. The charges come after an alleged incident on May 14, in the 5-year-old niece of Torres was discovered unconscious while under Torres’ care. The child was hospitalized locally then flown to a hospital in Des Moines.

After her arrest, Torres was held in the Hardin county jail and then posted $5,000 surety bond.

On June 20, Torres entered a not guilty plea to the charges. She waived her right to a speedy trial and now awaits a jury trial on August 23 and a pre-trial conference (possible plea deal) on August 4.

Torres was caught stealing from Wal-Mart in Mason City back in 2014. Mason City police were dispatched to Wal-Mart, 4151 4th Street SW, on the afternoon of November 30, 2014. Loss prevention employees had Torres detained for shoplifting. Torres was arrested and pled guilty the next day to fifth-degree theft. She was ordered to pay $387.50 in fines and fees. Torres was also caught stealing in Marshall county in 2012 and pled guilty to fifth degree theft.
