MASON CITY — The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is kicking off another year of their Care For Yourself Program. This program offers free mammogram and breast screening services to women who meet the following criteria:

Cerro Gordo County women ages 40-64
Any woman of any age who has signs of breast cancer
Non-insured, under-insured women or those unable to pay insurance deductibles or co-payments

“The University of Iowa estimates that 2,250 Iowa women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 390 Iowa women will die from breast cancer in 2015. These numbers have shown to decrease over the past five years partially due to greater emphasis on early detection,” says Karen Crimmings, Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion Manager, Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health.

The Care For Yourself Program gives women in need of financial assistance an opportunity to receive annual breast screenings. Early detection of breast cancer is the key to survival. Early detection methods include getting a mammogram and breast screening yearly beginning at age 40.

If you would like to talk with someone about the Health Department’s Care For Yourself Program or enroll in the program, call the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health at 641- 421-9315. If you would like to schedule your annual mammogram, call Forest Park Imaging at 641-428-6555.

Funded through the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Health Department program can help connect women with needed services.
