Drake University student arrested for saying “Columbine will look like childs play”

DES MOINES – A young man who studies at Drake University went on a social media rant and alluded to a possible shooting spree on campus before police arrested him early Friday morning.

Des Moines Police have made an arrest in the case of threats made to Drake University.
On October 16, Des Moines Police began an investigation after Drake University reported threats made to the campus over the “Yik Yak” social media site. The message threatened that “Columbine will look like childs play…” with the suspect going on to say he had access to “top tier guns.”

Des Moines Police Detectives worked through Yik Yak administrators and with the assistance of Drake University Officials, were able to identify Michael Zachary Crisp as the suspect. Mr. Crisp, an 18-year-old Drake student, admitted sending the threats when confronted and was arrested. He is charged with 1st degree harassment and was booked into the Polk County Jail around 3:00 AM Friday morning.

“Both the Des Moines Police Department and Drake University take threats such as these seriously and will investigate them fully and file appropriate charges against those who perpetrate these crimes,” according to a statement from the DMPD.

“The cooperation of Drake University Administrators was instrumental in the resolution of this investigation,” Sgt. Jason Halifax of the DMPD said.
