Minnesota woman wins $10,000 prize on ticket received at her family’s Clear Lake holiday gathering

CLEAR LAKE — A Minnesota woman has claimed a $10,000 prize on a lottery scratch ticket from her family’s Christmas gathering in northern Iowa.

Stephanie Charpentier of Rosemount, Minn., said that her father, Karl Nelson of Shell Rock, gives his family lottery scratch tickets as stocking stuffers every year, and as they played them at their recent gathering in Clear Lake, they found multiple winners among the bunch.

“We knew we had one $50 winner, one $20 winner and one $100 winner,” Charpentier said. “So I went to cash them all at Casey’s across the street.”

The store clerk handed them the customer receipt, and that’s when they realized one of their prizes was much larger than they initially thought.

“I said, ‘Count the zeros! That’s $10,000! We just won $10,000!’” Charpentier recalled with a laugh.

Charpentier claimed the “$100,000 Happy Holidays Crossword” prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery’s Mason City regional office. Her father had purchased the winning ticket at Kwik Star, 705 N. Public Road in Shell Rock. In the spirit of her family’s holiday gathering, she said she planned to share the winnings with her family.

“Awesome win, very grateful for the money,” she said.

The $100,000 Happy Holidays Crossword is a $10 scratch game. It features seven top prizes of $100,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.30.
