IOWA CITY – A West Liberty woman charged with felony willful injury and going armed with intent after a man was stabbed in an Iowa City bathroom has pleaded not guilty and faces a December trial date.
According to a report, a woman was booked into an Iowa City jail on May 7, 2014 related to an on-going investigation into a stabbing incident at Brother’s Bar in downtown Iowa City. According to police, 19-year-old Abigail Mata was in the men’s room at the large sports bar at about 1:00 AM on March 2, 2014, when a male victim came in and made a remark to her. Mata’s brother, who was also in the men’s room, then approached the victim, who turned to leave, when he felt a “shove” and then noticed blood on his arm. Shortly after this incident, police discovered a knife on the ground where Mata was involved in another altercation, in another bar. The defendant later admitted to police in recorded conversation that she had committed the stabbing.
Mata turned herself into police after the incidents, pleaded not guilty, and has been free on bond awaiting trial on December 9, and a pre-trial conference on November 25.
