ST. PAUL – The Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) reported Friday that charges were filed this week against an Apple Valley man who passed a school bus while driving a semi and nearly struck a child.

The MSP sought the public’s help tracking down a semi that illegally passed a stopped school bus May 30, nearly hitting a young female student waiting alongside the highway. The driver of the semi that illegally passed a school bus and was caught on video turned himself in after a video of the incident was posted online.

Cameras inside the bus captured the close call, which happened on Highway 23 near Paynesville and New London. Footage shows the semi blow past the stopped bus — lights flashing and stop arm down — and continue along the highway. The 13-year-old girl and bus driver were not injured.

Several witnesses called 911 but were unable to provide enough details for authorities to locate the semi.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the truck driver’s name is Allen H. Morris, age 48, of Apple Valley, and was distracted and looking away from the road while driving the semi. Morris was charged this week with violating two statutes on May 30 that called for him to obey the flashing bus lights and extended “stop” arm. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 10.

I wonder what took so long. If a child had been injured or killed because of this the driver would be facing real jail time. Damn fool.
