IOWA CITY – One of the top players for the Iowa basketball team last year who was caught on a surveillance camera punching a man out and then blowing him a goodbye kiss has had the assault charge against him dropped.

Court records show that an assault charge against 22-year-old Zach McCabe, who played in all 33 games last year for the Iowa Hawkeye men’s basketball team but has since left the team, was dropped on July 11th by a Johnson county prosecutor. McCabe was charged after an incident on May 16th outside DC’S Bar at 124 South Dubuque Street in Iowa City. A man with a cut and swollen face and approached police after midnight and told them that McCabe had struck him. Police obtained video footage from the bar that showed McCabe striking the man as McCabe was arguing with a female. The victim was trying to separate McCabe from the woman. The man falls to the ground after the punch. McCabe is seen leaving the bar, but not before blowing the man a kiss.

McCabe was later arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury.

McCabe, from Sioux City, was a popular player for the Iowa Hawkeyes last season, as the team reached a top-ten ranking. The team bowed out of the NCAA Tourney in the first round.
