NEW YORK – A gun control group led and financed by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is ramping up to take on the NRA in upcoming elections.
Bloomberg’s “Everytown for Gun Safety” describes itself as “a movement of Americans working together to end gun violence and build safer communities. Gun violence touches every town in America. For too long, change has been thwarted by the Washington gun lobby and by leaders who refuse to take common-sense steps that will save lives.”
Bloomberg has said he will spend up to $50 million to combat the National Rifle Association (NRA), America’s most powerful gun lobby.
Bloomberg’s group is set to embark on a strategy for the 2014 midterm election by surveying candidates as to where they stand on gun control issues.
“Unlike the NRA, we’re making our questionnaire available to the public,” the group announced. “And we’re asking our supporters to take the questionnaire to see how easy it is for candidates to make their positions clear.”
Among the questions asked in the survey: “Do you support requiring all gun buyers to pass a criminal background check?” and “Do you support banning the sale of high capacity ammunition magazines, or magazines that hold more than 10 bullets at a time?”
According to its website, Everytown is working with groups such as Moms Demand Action and Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Last week, Moms Demand Action praised a move by retailing giant Target to ban guns from its stores. It claims over 1.9 million people have joined its movement.

I support some form of gun control, but these items aren’t going to do much: Ten bullets in a magazine is enough to kill plenty, and he can always just pop in another magazine and resume the spree. I know of a mentally disturbed man with 2 long rifles and a revolver and he is delusional to beat hell…yet there is nothing anyone can do unless he were to perpetrate a crime with his guns. By the time he does start shooting, it will be too late.
