UPDATE: Man who shot Iowa police officer dead from self-inflicted gunshot wound

MAQUOKETA – On April 1, 2014, at approximately 2:51 A.M., A Maquoketa Police Officer stopped to check on a vehicle in the 200 block of West Grove Street in Maquoketa. The vehicle, a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup, was driven by Aaron Edward Scott. Scott exited the vehicle with a rifle and Scott and the officer exchanged gunfire. The officer was shot once in the left forearm and Scott fled the area in his pickup. The pickup was found a short time just north of Highway 136 on 150th Avenue in Clinton County. The pickup had been involved in a rollover accident and Scott was deceased inside the pickup.

On April 2, 2014, an autopsy was performed at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner on the body of Aaron Edward Scott by Dr. Dennis Klein. Dr. Klein determined the cause of death to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The manner of death will be certified as a suicide. The autopsy showed Scott was shot one time in the leg by the officer. This injury was not life threatening.

The name of the officer involved with this incident is now being released. The officer is Sgt. Brendan Zeimet, a 13-year veteran of the Maquoketa Police Department. Sgt. Zeimet was treated and released following the shooting incident and is in good condition. Sgt. Zeimet is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

More details about the incident will be released once the investigation is completed. The investigation is continuing and being conducted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the Jackson County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.
