Iowa City landlord who peeped on co-eds jailed and fined

IOWA CITY – An Iowa City landlord who was convicted of spying on his college-age female tenants – one of them from Mason City – has been find thousands of dollars and sentenced to prison.

Elwyn Gene Miller, age 64, reportedly begged Judge Stephen Gerard for a lenient sentence. Miller was earlier found guilty of invasion of privacy involving nudity, where the defendant knowingly viewed female tenants in apartments he owns for the purpose of arousing or gratifying his sexual desire.  Miller reportedly had drilled holes in bathroom walls and attempted to watch the women as they showered.  Miller was found guilty on six of eleven counts, records show.

Miller was sentenced on February 11th to 150 days in jail and $6,000 in fines.  He was assed a total of $10,519.15, including fees.  He already paid $4,000.  He must also be listed on the state sex offender list.  He also faces civil suits from some of the former female tenants, one of which is from Mason City.

Miller is being sued by Joseph LaPointe of Mason City, the father of 22-year-old Ruth LaPointe, a former tenant of Miller’s who lived in an apartment where Miller was allegedly spying on college-age women.  An October 14th trial has been set for that civil suit.
