AMES, Iowa – April 20, 2013 – The Iowa Department of Transportation has learned of the arrest of and charges being filed against former employee David Weigel. The charges concern David Weigel allegedly using his position in the Department for personal gain while disposing of excess state property. David Weigel worked at the DOT from June of 1995 until July of 2011.

The DOT learned of possible criminal activity by David Weigel in May of 2011. We took immediate action by suspending him and conducting an internal investigation. As a result of that internal investigation, the DOT notified the Governor on July 7th, 2011, of real estate transactions conducted by David Weigel that we believed were criminal in nature. This notification requested that the Office of Auditor of State and the Attorney General’s Office open an investigation of this employee.

Director Paul Trombino issued the following statement regarding this incident:

“We appreciate the work of the Department of Public Safety and all other agencies regarding this matter. We expect full prosecution of this former employee; this type of behavior is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. I am confident in our DOT team and we are committed to our mission we deliver every day for the citizens and State of Iowa.”
