Op-ed: Destroy eleven families to appease Mr. Budweiser? (by Peter Children)

There are two things to discuss today; (1) The possible destruction of eleven families to appease Mr. Budweiser and his baby sitter Brent. (2) We can all take a large collective sigh knowing the Globe Gazette approves the decision to “hold back” on the possibility of the giant sand castle in the sky which was to mark the unfortunate term of Eric.

The article in today’s Globe talks about competive bidding; we now want the city to bid against itself on the issue of garbage collecting.  Lets pretend for only purposes of illustration that I am Holt Services, and lets pretend further that I can’t pay my dumping fees at the North Iowa Land Fill and in general I am on my ass financially; perhaps I have spent my money of too many funny commercials…whatever. This is all for purposes of illustration, none of it is real.

To continue; would it not be in my best interest to summit a bid on the possibility of hauling garbage for the City of Mason City? Furthermore wouldn’t it be smart on my part to make that bid unbelievably low in order to win the contract…knowing later in the near future I could jack it up with little trouble.

If bids are taken, who’s running this freak show? Are the bids secret? Let me tell you; there are no secrets at Five East.  Like the committee to build the Sand Castle, this is a stacked deck.  Some examples of other cities experiences were quoted in today article by Five East’s main propagandist John Skipper; of course they were all on the positive side of the Jolly Green Bean Stalk, there was no down side presented, nor will there be.

We have a system in our Sanitation Department that is not broken, it does not require fixing; leave it alone.  What really needs fixing is Eric.  I am of the opinion we can’t afford to wait until this inmate’s term runs out, he needs to be contained somehow.  It is painfully aware by now that this lockstep council has got the balls of a eunuch, each and every one of them. The Chamber has all got red scarfs, I think the council should be issued pink scarfs because they’re all pussies.  To those of you out there who are so fast with your mouths on so many issues; lets hear you speak up now on the garbage issue; use you vote to send a message as to what you will do come the next election…but do not remain silent, not now….

It was part of my job years ago, to use Statistical Process Control. Ed Deming¹ felt that such a comparison as proposed to our City Council, was not important to internal process improvement (i.e. providing the best service or product you can).

He did not embrace Benchmarking as is being proposed to our City Council. He said: “Benchmarking is the last stage of civilization,” Indeed, one of his Fourteen Points was: “4.Don’t award business on price tag alone. Another point was: 8.Drive out fear. Create a fear-free environment where everyone can contribute and work effectively.

Both are being violated in Mason City.

Another teaching of Deming’s is violated here, if the process or product is not out of specification, don’t try to fix it. From what I have heard, most folks are happy with their service, and what they pay. That must be the real focus of any improvement, does the service you provide meet customers demands? It is only up to the customer to decide, not the provider.

¹W. Ed Deming was a native of Sioux City, who became famous for transforming businesses through the use of Statistical Process Control. In 1950, he was invited to Japan while American companies ignored Deming’s teachings on Quality for years. It can be said without question, he the guru in his field.

They don’t use that model in Plymouth either do they Observer?

Mason City’s government is into “Sustainable Development”. This is why Bookmeyer and his gang are trying to privatize the City’s Garbage Department. This is all part of of bringing Socialism to society.

It is very subtle but that is what Beermeyer and his gang are up to.

I believe you have it backwards.Turning the sanitation department into a private enterprise is called “Capitalism”.
What the City did to the ambulance service is called “socialism”. That was done by by Max,Jeff and Don and others!

What worries me about this, is the company who most here agree can give the lowest bid, is the company that has had so many problems in the past.

I am not saying at all that everything they offer is bad. However, looking at the violations on his trucks, lack of permits for certain advertised services, double billing customers, and more, do we want them to inherit something we as residents take near and dear?

And ladies and gentlemen, take heed what Hiram has said here.

While the Administrator may not be directly elected by the people, the Council, which must approve this silly notion, directly works for you. Make it quite clear to them, get on to more important business or face the consequences.

So I gather all is NOT well in River City? I was always told that this is a happy place and people got along so well with one another. What ever happened to the moniker….”Mason City we like it here”???

Call your council people right now before it is to late. Don’t let them make a big mistake. Please call now!!

Mr. Children – How can you be so inaccurate?? You know as well as everyone that Kuhn is trying to stop this.

Why not write something thanking him and encouraging others to get behind him to not privitize this department?

I have no idea that Kuhn was trying to stop this; how would I know that? If he’s serious why doesn’t he contact Skipper and make a statement to that effect? Otherwise it could be just an act. I don’t trust anyone at that table.

Follow the Money! Currently, we have 12 city workers making an honest days pay and benefits and we are considering replacing them with a “for profit” enterprise. How will a potential contractor make a profit on this? I am sure they will replace the city workers with minimum wage, no benefit types to profit on the payroll.. So it comes down to this, would the citizenry like to see their tax money distributed equitably over 12 people or would the citizry rather have one fat cat make a profit with minimum wage workers and the service quality that goes with that? Easy choice for me, leave it the way it is.

The costs go beyond your garbage bill currently $9/ mo. A great price for weekly pickup. For the sake of argument let’s say the private service costs the same, or less on that bill. The big picture is someone will be making a profit while providing little to no benefits. The cost to you the tax payer is more as these low wage earners will require more public assistance with food stamps, reduced lunch fees, etc. when these low wage earners get older they will be a higher burden on the healthcare system because the kids will be on hawkeye, adults on Medicaid, no retirement and social security isn’t enough. This will cost you more in the long run.

Oh no you don’t. Scott Walker and Wisconson’s problems are real. Mason City’s are made up and phoney

Quit with the propaganda trying to bring down the good name of George Bush and Scott Walker.

Keep on task, take your pills, and keep trying to sell your guitars, but don’t jump on here and lie about good people.

You want to carp about Bookmeyer and his gang there is plenty of proof to show they are corrupt.

This garbage Bullshxt is just more proof!

Mr. Children, if you will get a potition started to get rid of the Mayor and and his vote guards. I will take it around to have it signed, I believe I could get enough names in one day..Jim

I buy about 12 bottles of beer a year. Invariably I drink them all over the course of the summer; I buy MGDB because I ilke it and as everyone knows, I suffer from good taste.

Dear Peter, please stop comparing your mayor to a quality beverge like Budweiser.
How about Mayor High Life or Mr. Schlitz?

i definitely agree with Mayor Schlitz as a name. i think we all know how his attitude, personality, disposition, and decisions completely mirror the effects of the beverage presented. you can put lipstick on a pig but at the end of the day its still a pig. those douches have nothing better to do than to find things to “fix” or “destroy” that aren’t broken. if only we could get rid of them and have monkeys run the offices we would be in much better standing. again- just sayin.
