OCCIDENTAL, Calif. ñ Former University of Northern Iowa runner and NCAA national champion Tyler Mulder clocked a lifetime-best in the 800m on Saturday night, running 1:44.83 at the Oxy High Performance Meet held at Occidental College. Mulder’s 800m time is the second-fastest run by an American in 2011. |OCCIDENTAL, Calif. ñ Former University of Northern Iowa runner and NCAA national champion Tyler Mulder clocked a lifetime-best in the 800m on Saturday night, running 1:44.83 at the Oxy High Performance Meet held at Occidental College. Mulder’s 800m time is the second-fastest run by an American in 2011.
Mulder trimmed nearly one second off his previous personal-best of 1:45.73, and his performance was good enough for a second-place finish in the meet. The meet champion, Cory Primm, crossed the line in 1:44.71 to set the fastest time by an American this season.
Mulder’s performance also put him under the IAAF World Championships ‘A’ Standard for the first time in his career ñ an important step toward qualifying for the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, Korea.
Mulder currently competes for Nike’s Oregon Track Club Elite. He wrapped up his collegiate career at UNI in June 2009 as the most decorated athlete in school history, earning eight All-America honors along with winning the 2008 NCAA Indoor 800m title.
In his time at UNI, Mulder set individual school records in the 800m (outdoor) and 1000m (indoor). The Orange City, Iowa, native also aided in setting school records in the 4x400m relay (outdoor), 1,600m medley relay (outdoor), and distance medley relay (indoor).
In 2010, Mulder took third at the USA Indoor Championships in the 800m and ran the 800m leg on OTC Elite’s distance medley relay squad that set a world indoor best time of 9:21.77. In June 2010, Mulder claimed fourth at the USA Outdoor Championships in the 800m.
