Michigan man who ran off with Iowa teen, causing amber alert, faces serious charges

WATERLOO — A Michigan man is facing serious felony charges after a missing 12-year-old child from Waterloo was rescued following a multi-state Amber Alert on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

The Waterloo Police Department requested the statewide alert after the child went missing under suspicious circumstances. According to officials, the situation saw a rapid resolution; within approximately one hour of the Amber Alert being issued, Waterloo detectives were notified that the suspect’s vehicle had been intercepted by law enforcement in Kaloma Township, Michigan. The 12-year-old was found safe with authorities on the scene.

Following an intensive investigation, Waterloo detectives charged 23-year-old Daniyal Khan of Ann Arbor, Michigan, in connection with the abduction. Khan is facing several severe charges, including:

  • Kidnapping in the Second Degree

  • Indecent Contact with a Child

  • Sexual Exploitation of a Minor

The Amber Alert originally identified the child as Deyton Annabelle Cranston, and listed the suspect as a male known as “Danny” driving a red Toyota Camry with tinted windows and a black spoiler.

Khan (pictured at top) was taken into custody and booked into the Berrien County Jail in Michigan, where he is currently being held. Waterloo police stated that the investigation remains ongoing and no additional details regarding the circumstances of the abduction are being released at this time.
