FORT DODGE – A Fort Dodge house fire over the weekend sent home occupants scurrying for safety in the frigid night air as the structure burned completely, claiming a dog’s life and injuring a firefighter.
At 12:41 AM Saturday morning, December 13, the Fort Dodge Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 225 J street.
Fire crews arrived at a 2-story wood frame home with fire showing from most of the 1st story. Due to icy conditions and below freezing temperatures, it was difficult setting up operations. Fire attack, search, and forcible entry were initiated on arrival. Fire was well involved in the 1st story and extended to the 2nd story and attic. Multiple handlines were utilized to bring the fire under control and extensive overhaul of the fire area was conducted. Primary searches were clear and the home’s occupants were able to escape without assistance.
A callback for a 2nd alarm was called, bringing back 5 off-duty firefighters to bring Engine 11 and Medic 4 to the scene.
A total of 17 fire department personnel were on scene for about 5 hours.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries. A dog perished at the scene.
The building is currently owned by Jeff and Janice Johnson of Fort Dodge.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Fort Dodge Police and Mid-American Energy assisted at the scene.
