Jon “Jack” Leonard King, 80, of Manly, Iowa passed away peacefully December 27, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loved ones.
Jack was born September 6, 1945 in Oelwein, Iowa, the youngest and only son of Leonard Ross and Ruth Mable (Pardee) King. In his high school years he was a celebrated athlete. He graduated with the class of 1963. He later went on to attend Drake University where he played baseball. For many years, he owned Yelland and Hanes in Mason City, becoming ingrained in the community. His path in life led him towards working for Stoney Creek Hospitality until he retired. Jon met and married the love of his life Linda Hambly in 1984.
Jack was a lifelong and devoted Iowa Hawkeye fan. He rarely missed an opportunity to tailgate with family and friends before home football games, and he and Linda proudly followed the Hawkeyes to many away games as well. Those that knew Jack were more than familiar with his quick wit and his ability to make everyone laugh. During his retirement years, Jack especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren and traveling with Linda in their RV.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda; children, Tammy (Dennis) Fender, David (Molly) King, Jeff (Nicole Ryden) King, Debbie (Chad Kober) King; brother-in-law, Morris (Barb) Hambly; son-in-law, Steve Whitney, his brother Tim Whitney; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Whitney; parents, Ruth and Leonard; in-laws, Lola and Glen Hambly; and sisters, Gayle, Sandra, Janice, and Jill.
Per Jack’s wishes, the family will not hold formal services and will have a private celebration of his life in April.
