Roger Franklin Andrews ,92, Frederika, Iowa passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025 in Tripoli.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, May 10, 2025, at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika with Rev. Evan Meester officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery, rural Frederika. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Friday, May 9th at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to St John Lutheran Church, Frederika, Cedar Valley Hospice, or Cedar Valley Honor Flight.
Roger was born on May 1, 1933, in Washington County, Virginia (near Abingdon, a historic town in the Appalachian Mountains) to Garland and Margaret Virginia (Peters) Andrews.
In 1941 his family moved to Detroit, Michigan. He was drafted in 1953 into the United States Army during the Korean War. Roger was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado and was discharged in 1955.
After returning to Detroit, he married Darlene M Bergmann, and they lived in the Detroit area for 21 years. Roger worked for the American Can Company in Detroit. He was transferred from Detroit to Greensboro, North Carolina. From there they went to Houston, Texas and lived in the Humble, Texas area. One last transfer before retirement took them to the Chicago, Illinois area.
After retiring, Roger and Darlene came back to her hometown, Frederika, Iowa in 1989. At one point in time Roger served on the Park Board, was a trustee at St John Lutheran in Frederika. He was also a volunteer fireman for the Frederika Fire Department.
Some of his favorite hobbies were building and flying model planes and building computers.
They also loved their time at Rio Valley Estates in Weslaco, Texas in the winter. His ultimate dream hobby was to someday own his own rig and become an OTR trucker.
In September of 2014 Roger had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. on the Waterloo Honor Flight.
Roger is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Darlene. Also, his sister Reta Babisz and brother Daniel Andrews of Michigan, and brother-in-law, Mel Bergmann, Tripoli. Roger is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Don and several nieces, nephews, sisters –in- law and brothers-in-law.
