St. Ansgar teen killed in early morning car crash in Worth county

RURAL WORTH COUNTY – A St. Ansgar teen was killed Saturday morning when the Grand Prix he was riding in left the roadway and struck a power pole near Kensett.

According to the Iowa State Patrol a fatal one-car crash occurred on Saturday, March 1, 2025, in rural Worth county. At 6:40 AM this morning, a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix operated by 20-year-old Blair Hansen of St. Ansgar, Iowa, was traveling eastbound on 410th Street near Killdeer Avenue, just west of Kensett. Hansen lost control of the vehicle and entered the north ditch, striking a power pole and coming to rest in the ditch.

Mercy Air Med

As a result of the accident, a passenger in the Grand Prix, 16-year-old Ayden Lee Steele of St. Ansgar, was injured and taken by Northwood EMS to Mercy One Hospital in Mason City. The Patrol reports that he passed away. Hansen was injured and transported by Mercy One Airmed to Mercy One North Iowa.

Both subjects were wearing seatbelts, the Patrol says.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by Worth County Sheriff’s Office, Kensett Fire Department, Northwood Fire Department, Northwood EMS, Mercy One Airmed, and Alliant Energy.  The Pontiac was towed from the scene by Dick’s Towing.
