WASHINGTON, D.C. – Babies spend much of their time sleeping so it’s important to create an environment that is restful but also safe. The federal government says they want to make the process easy for new parents, so the Consumer Product Safety Commission created the SafeSleep campaign and Baby Safety Video.

These are a few ways to create a safer sleeping environment for your new baby, tips to make sure your baby’s sleeping safely:
- Bare is Best: To prevent suffocation, never place pillows or thick quilts/blankets in a baby’s sleep environment.
- Back to Sleep: Always place the baby to sleep on the baby’s back to reduce the risk of sudden unexpected infant death syndrome (SUID/SIDS) and suffocation.
- Only place the baby to sleep in a product that is intended for infant sleep. (Adult beds are intended for sleep, but not for infants.) Transfer the baby to a crib, bassinet, play yard or bedside sleeper if the baby falls asleep in a swing, bouncer, lounger, or similar product.
Did you know inclined sleepers are unsafe?
Our most recent report on nursery product injuries and deaths shows that cluttered sleep environments, such as the presence of extra bedding, pillows, blankets, and/or comforters in and on cribs/mattresses, and inclined infant sleepers were among a group of products associated with 70 percent of fatalities.
Popular products formerly referred to as “inclined sleep products” include several styles that have been recalled over the years.
