WEST DES MOINES – An Iowa man allegedly bugged his wife’s car, planted illegal drugs and called in false crimes in am effort to gain the upper hand in a child custody dispute.
In September of 2020, a harassment report was filed with the Clive, Iowa police department, alleging that certain crimes had been reported about the victim, by her estranged husband. This included allegations of drug and firearms possession as well as endangerment to the children involved.
Through the course of the ensuing police investigation, it was determined that the suspect had allegedly called police to report his ex-wife for driving while intoxicated, planted drug and gun evidence in the victim’s vehicle, tracked the victim with a GPS tracking system and may have been involved in damaging her vehicle.
In January, after months of follow-up investigations, evidence examination and interviews, police detectives were able to obtain arrest warrants for the suspect in this case. On January 28, 2021, the suspect, 42-year-old Daniel Roy Dunham of West Des Moines, Iowa, turned himself in to detectives at the Clive Police Department. After being booked, he was transported to the Dallas County Jail on the charges of Possession of Cocaine with the Intent to Deliver (C felony), Stalking (D felony) and two (2) counts of Child Endangerment.
“All of the defendant’s actions were done in an attempt to discredit his wife, so that he could gain favor in a child custody dispute,” police said in a statement. “His actions were not only illegal, but exposed his children to potential harm, beyond that of a divorce. This a prime example of a civil matter spiraling into criminal activity.”
Dunham is currently in the custody of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. His bond has been set at $10,000.00.
