CEDAR RAPIDS – An Iowa man was caught after robbing a Cedar Rapids liquor and tobacco store.
On Thursday, November 5 at 10:34 p.m. the City’s Joint Communications Agency received a report of an armed robbery at the Smokin’ Joe’s, 2315 Mount Vernon Road SE. An individual entered the store, displayed a handgun, and demanded money from the store clerk. The suspect took cash and stole cigarettes and cigars from the store.
Officers arrived on scene and obtained a description of the robbery suspect. Officers were able to determine the suspect fled on foot to the south of the store. A Police K9 officer and his K9 partner began a track of the suspect in that direction. Officers were able to obtain evidence along the route of the track that led to a residence near the intersection of 24th Street and 12th Avenue SE. The Police K9 indicated that the suspect was in the back yard of one of the residences.
As police officers were establishing a perimeter, a gunshot was fired from the back yard of the residence where the Police K9 indicated that the suspect was located. Officers were able to take the suspect into custody without incident. No one was injured by the gunfire that was determined to have originated from a handgun in the suspect’s possession. Officers were able to recover a 9mm handgun from the suspect.
Cash and items stolen from Smokin’ Joe’s were recovered, along with personal items that belonged to the victim who was robbed at gunpoint.
The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Dushaun Xavier Scott of Cedar Rapids. He was arrested for two counts of Robbery-1st Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Reckless Use of a Firearm, and Carrying Weapons, then taken to the Linn County Jail.
