NIACC tops Iowa Lakes to claim Iowa Central Fall Kickoff tournament

FORT DODGE – The NIACC women’s golf team shot a 366 in its opening round of the fall season Tuesday and placed first at the Iowa Central Fall Kickoff tournament.

It was the first tournament title for the NIACC women since they won the Iowa Central Spring Invitational in 2013.

Iowa Lakes placed second with a 377. Host Iowa Central and DMACC did not field full teams at Tuesday’s invitational.

“I feel really good for our women’s team getting the victory over (Tuesday),” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. “Iowa Lakes is a quality program and to come to a golf course that was playing fast and win is a nice way to start the fall season.”

Thea Lunning led the NIACC women with a 41-43 – 84 to place second in the individual medalist competition.

“Thea puts the time in over the summer and her game is solid from tee to green,” Frenz said.

Also for the Lady Trojans, Hailey Panos shot a 42-48 – 90, Ashley Voves shot a 46-46 – 92 and Abby Murray shot a 49-51 -100.

“Freshman Hailey Panos gave a solid effort (Tuesday) in her first collegiate experience,” Frenz said. “She said she was a little nervous but I sure didn’t sense any nerves.

“The nice thing about this is they know they can play better and will need to in order to compete against the teams in our region. But this was a nice confidence boost.”

NIACC returns to action Friday at the NIACC Fall Invitational. The tournament starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Mason City Country Club.
