AMES — Rachel Junck, Iowa State University student and Ames native became the youngest woman ever elected to public office in Iowa, beating the two-term incumbent 55% to 45% in a runoff election. The runoff was triggered after Junck won 49% of votes, but was seven votes shy of a majority (her next closest competitor got 34% of the vote).

Ames is a town of 67,000 people, including 35,000 Iowa State University students, but Rachel is the first student to ever be elected to the Ames City Council. Rachel, a twenty-year-old ISU Chemical Engineering junior, built an unprecedented multi-generational campaign, working to bring all facets of the Ames community together and driving student turnout to historic levels.

“This is a victory for students, longtime residents, tenants, and for our climate. I’m honored and humbled to join the City Council,” Junck said. “It is incredible that we were able to increase our vote total by nearly 20%. It shows how much Ames values and is engaged with their local government,” Rachel said.

This campaign is historic. Not only is Rachel the youngest woman elected to office in Iowa’s history, but she is also the first Iowa State University Student elected to Ames City Council.

Junck continued, “I am so incredibly proud of all the hard work we put into this campaign and am ready to get to work for Ames.”

Rachel Junck was born and raised in Ames, Iowa, the home of Iowa State University. where she currently studies chemical engineering. Rachel ran for city council to be the voice of both life-long residents like herself and of students, who make up more than half of the city’s population. Rachel is – at age twenty -the youngest woman elected to any office in the history of Iowa.
