MASON CITY – The thirst from a hot summer’s day led a Mason City man to attempt the heist of a pack of tasty beverages, only to be thwarted by mindful management.

The incident went down just before 3 PM at the Fareway grocery store, located at 400 N Delaware Avenue. Bert Leroy Roberts Jr., age 60 of Mason City, allegedly tried to leave the store without paying for a pack of Uncle Mike’s Hard Lemonade valued at $17.71. NIT was told as Roberts was loaded into a squad car parked in front of the store that “the manager came up to him on the way out and stopped him… that’s his second try in the last few days.”

Roberts was arrested on a charge of fifth-degree theft and taken to the county jail for processing.

Police tell NIT, in reference to the alleged prior attempted theft, that “it does not appear Roberts was arrested for the prior incident at Fareway from a few weeks ago. I am not sure if they intend to file charges on the prior incident or not.”

Roberts was banned from returning to the Fareway store property.  He was convicted 2 years ago of theft in the third degree here in Cerro Gordo county.

  1. Hey Allen ! Waters free? $1.00 a bottle at Caseys credit card company – that means they don’t have a buck in cash to their name.

  2. Awe! Come ON! He just short circuited for a brief moment ! Get a DNC lawyer/liar and he will walk – hopefully not stumble.
