HAMPTON – Shawn Dietz, Republican nominee for State Senate from District 27, this evening sent a letter to Governor Terry Branstad in response to President Barack Obama’s Executive Order that called for possible National Guard troop deployment to nations in West Africa to deal with the outbreak of Ebola. The text of the letter follows:
Dear Governor Branstad,
I am writing you in response to today’s executive order from President Obama authorizing deployment of National Guard troops to West Africa to “…provid[e] support to civilian-led humanitarian assistance and consequence management support related to the Ebola virus disease outbreak.” I am writing to encourage you to stand on your authority under the Constitution of the State of Iowa as the Commander in chief of the Iowa National Guard, and deny any request from the Federal Government to unnecessarily send Iowa’s troops into harm’s way. An action that would surely put their lives in danger, and upon their return home, may put the health and wellness of their families and other Iowans in jeopardy.
With more than 4,000 deaths, the Ebola outbreak in Africa is certainly dangerous and tragic. There are certainly better options for the Federal Government to provide assistance and support to these West African nations than sending our troops to fight an invisible, biological enemy, causing certain sickness and death for some of the brave men and women who would be deployed, and the possible spread of this virus upon their return.
I write to you this evening as a citizen of our great State, concerned for the health and welfare of our National Guard, as well as the general public. Thank you for consideration of this request.

I don’t agree with, yet again an Executive Order making us do something that is not good for the Country. I truly get what Dietz is saying and I totally agree. What is there so hard to understand about his message?
Dietz will win! If Terry sends our national guard to ebola country he will LOOSE his bid for re-election. This obama crap has to be corraled sometime and SOON!

I was going to vote for Dietz before this. Sending our Nat’l Guard in is asinine. But it sure goes along with our White House thinking. Take the US down, won’t be happy till we also are a third world country. We’re heading there fast.

I agree with Dietz. Keep our people at home. There is no reason to endanger our Nation Guard. Let the country’s that are affected take care of their own.
With the public crying out for a travel ban they need a backup plan to get the virus here in the states and with the ban the only ones traveling here to there and back would be our troops. Hey LVS, I met a guy named todd the other day, I think that’s what his name was.
@maybe-Todd is a good guy. We need the travel ban before it gets to wide spread.
I agree on the travel ban but with Obama sending troops over there, that will negate the reason of the travel ban. Our troops will bring the virus back instead.

I agree 100% with Dietz. We need to stay the hell out of that country. The Guard and Reserves now make up almost 50% of the US military. This muslim president will do anything he can to destroy this country. Sending our soldiers there so they can become infected, and then bringing home to infect the rest of this country is asinine.
