CEDAR RAPIDS – A crash at a Cedar Rapids race track claimed the life of a driver Saturday night during a “Race’ Em and Wreck’ Em” event.
A statement from the Hawkeye Downs race track said that during Saturday night’s Race’ Em and Wreck’ Em event at Hawkeye Downs “there was an accident that resulted in fatal injuries to a driver / participant.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the driver’s family, friends and loved ones,” said Hawkeye Downs Executive Director Roy Nowers.
“Hawkeye Downs has a long history of racing and when an accident like this happens it is a hard blow to everyone. We are a tight knit racing community at Hawkeye Downs and are all deeply saddened by this tragic accident.”
Out of respect for the family, Hawkeye Downs did not identify the driver.
The event was well-attended. The accident was between a bus and an RV, and a driver was trapped for about 30 minutes as emergency responders worked to release him.
