MASON CITY – A chemical spill at a Mason City dental office led to the evacuation of persons from the building.

According to a report from the Mason City Fire Department, emergency responders were dispatched for a chemical spill at Aspen Dental, 4199 Indianhead Drive, on August 21 at about11:30 AM. The callers advised that they were evacuating the building.

Upon arrival, the fire department responders were met by Aspen Dental staff, and they stated that a 1 liter bottle of Lucitone fas-por that’s used for a polymerizing agent in making dentures was dropped and the glass bottle broke, spilling onto the floor and was creating a strong odor in the back room.

Firefighters using SCBA and a gas monitor entered the building and proceeded to the area where the MSDS sheets were kept and retrieved them. MSDS sheet for the chemical indicated that the product was flammable, but evaporated quickly. The product could cause skin irritation if exposed to it. Firefighters reentered the building and proceeded to the room with the spill and monitored the area. No explosive or atmospheric problems were indicated on the monitor.

Employees of the business covered up the spill with about 25 towels. These towels were moved to a trash bag and out of the business into a metal garbage can by firefighters. The building was ventilated and no odor was detected other than right in the room of origin for the spill. Aspen Dental made arrangement for disposal for the towels.
