MASON CITY – The Mason City Aquatic Center and Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank will try once again to host their second annual “Swim and Share” night on Tuesday, August 19th from 1 to 5 p.m and 6 to 8 p.m. The original event was schedule for Tuesday, July 15, at the aquatic center but due to cold weather the event had to be rescheduled. Last year this event collected 598 bars of soap.
”We hope that with the rescheduled date this year that we can hopefully receive to up to 1,000 bars” noted food bank volunteer Ozzie Ohl. The food bank typically distributes more than 1,000 bars of soap each month so that would supply the food bank with one month’s supply.
Swimming will be free to anyone bringing three or more bars of soap that will be donated to the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank. Season pass holders will get a coupon for a free bottle of water for donating three bars or more of soap.
If anyone wants to make a financial donation to the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank Step up to the Plate Capital campaign a collection bucket will be staffed by a food bank volunteer. Currently Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank has raised $161,000 of the $300,000 they need for their move to 122 South Adams in mason City.
Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank is a locally organized all volunteer non-profit organization that serves almost 18,000 people with emergency food and non food perishables. Those who use the services of the local food bank come from more than 41 communities in Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Floyd, Franklin, Hancock, Mitchell, Winnebago, Worth and Wright counties. Last year they distributed almost 300,000 pounds of canned and boxed food, bread and baked goods, fresh produce along with miscellaneous items and non perishables such as bar soap and toilet paper.
