Serving on commissions, boards and panels in the community in which you live can turn out to be quite costly if you are in business for yourself – especially if you are serving without compensation. If you are in business in a small town and a large portion of your revenue is derived from customers living next door and down the street from you, you might want to reconsider some of those volunteer appointments.
Many of your customers will never mention the decisions you are required to make while serving on a commission without pay; no, they will just go elsewhere for the needs you once supplied.
When a politician asks you to serve, it is more than likely done because he or she feels you will lean towards their personal agenda when the need arises – they might think you are a vote they can count on, or you will steer things in their direction – and not necessarily because they feel you are best suited. What they neglect to realize is the bottom line cost to you and your business. Take heed.

I predict; as the Mason City, Mayor & Council elections draw nearer, these screeds will increase. Both in frequency and venom.
Peter-Everyone knows this. What is your point?
Nothing new here.
Peter – this was unknown to whom?
I get what you are saying. That is generally true.
Remember at least one person we know serving on the Human Rights Commission and making a stink has all the money he needs. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Wink Wink.
That is why he don’t give a hoot what he says or does.
What is best for the citizens that live here is not part of his agenda. He has an axe to grind.
