HAMPTON – It was a bright, sunny morning Saturday when the Hampton-Dumont Scholarship Fund hosted a Color Dash. The Color Dash 5K is a unique experience focused less on speed and more on crazy color fun with friends and family.

“Over 400 people were registered,” said Sheryl Borcherding. “The cost was $40.00 to participate, and the money will go toward local student scholarships.”

Color runners came from all different ages, shapes, sizes, and speeds. During this untimed race, the racers were warned that even though they started out as clean as a bar of soap, it would not last for long. As the Dash progressed the runners would find themselves covered in a spectrum of colors: blue, green, pink, orange and yellow. At each Kilometer during the Dash a new color explosion will add to the clean slate that they once were, until they came to the finish line and arrive into a color explosion finale.

The colors were a non-toxic, non-irritating, food-grade colored corn-starch processed in the United States. Running, walking, crawling or rolling through this spectacular show of color is the goal of The Color Dash, “To Lift your spirits and color your day!!”

They wanted people to be creative. There was a costume contest, along with refreshments at the end of the dash, so the dashers were asked to dress up, dress crazy, like Jeff and Tracy Spear, who dressed as a Tooth and the Tooth Fairy, “We had a lot of fun,” said Tracy. They started out with their outfits being totally white and ended dressed in a rainbow of colors.

The un-timed race and no age limit allowed family and friends to all participate and to have fun. Sue Rodemeyer, a Secretary at Hampton-Dumont High School did the Dash with her granddaughter, Ila Rodemeyer, a Second Grader who used a scooter along the way of her dash. Siblings Kandi Borcherding and Rod Pratt had fun getting colored at each Kilometer, as did friends Kelly Meader, Stacey Pratt and Susan Bender.

“I loved the color explosion at the end,” said Sheryl Borcherding. “I didn’t race, but my daughter and husband, Katie and Justin Hesnard, and my other daughter, Jenna Borcherding did.”
