Iowa Falls man admits shaking infant daughter and is arrested after her death

WATERLOO – Waterloo police have arrested an Iowa Falls man in connection with his infant daughter’s death while they were in Waterloo.

On Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at approximately 10:32 PM, Waterloo Fire and Waterloo Police were dispatched to 1012 Wellington Street in reference to an unresponsive two-month-old child, Aubriana Christian. Trevor Eugene Smith, who is the father of the child and the only care provider present, stated he was feeding the child a bottle when she went stiff and had trouble breathing.

The child was transported to Covenant Hospital before being flown to the University of Iowa Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Contact was made with hospital personnel who advised that the child had a brain bleed consistent with non-accidental trauma. Investigators interviewed Smith and he admitted to shaking the victim on two separate occasions because she would not stop crying. Eventually the child was removed from life support and passed away on October 2, 2012. An autopsy revealed her injuries were inflicted and consistent with the actions Smith described.

On January 14th, 2013, Trevor Eugene Smith, age 27, of 1430 Georgetown Rd. Apt. 106 Iowa Falls, IA, was placed under arrest by Investigators of the Waterloo Police Department and charged with Child Endangerment Resulting in Death and Murder in the 1st Degree.
