Former North Iowa man killed by insurgents in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense announced recently the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Killed Spc. Joseph A. Richardson, 23, of Booneville, Ark. Richardson spent much of his childhood in Algona, Iowa.

Richardson died Nov. 16, in Paktika province, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

Richardson was posthumously promoted to sergeant, according to the Facebook page for his division.
