Sara Eden of Mason City helped coordinate the event for Harley.

“It’s a beautiful day, the wind is better than we thought it would be.  We got burgers and dogs on the grill.  Can’t ask for much more than this,” she said.

Felicia Morgan, Director of Communication of the Motorcycle Cannonball said “we will be covering 11 states. Almost 4,000 miles from New York to California. We are hitting all of the big icons we can. We started out with 71 motorcycles. We have guys from 11 different countries and 4 different continents.”

Participants are riding vintage motorcycles such, Henderson, Indian, Triumph, Harley-Davidson, Rudge, JAP, Excelsior, BSA, Sunbeam and others as they navigate the difficult 3,954-miles route. A week into travel, riders will have a day of rest, repairs, and some scheduled festivities in the well-known motorcycle town of Sturgis, SD on September 14. The ride is slated to conclude on Sunday, September 23 in San Francisco, California.

Felicia said the ride has been smooth so far for the most part except for two accidents, one in which a rider’s bike was damaged and he could not continue. “The first accident was a man from California blew a tire and he rolled his bike,” she said.  “He is OK but he went home. Another rider had a car pull out in front of him. He was checked out and he’s alright and still on the road.”

It was pretty neat to see these vintage machines going down the highway yesterday. They are brave people to ride those old machines. The good thing is you can repair them with some duct tape and baling wire.

I didn’t think your mom would ever leave my house last night!

I didn’t think you could keep one of those duct taped together for 80+ years.
