RURAL BUCHANAN COUNTY – An elderly Iowa motorcyclist struck a deer while riding his Harley-Davidson and the collision cost him his life, authorities say.

On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at approximately 12:00 PM, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office received 911 reports of a motorcyclist down in the roadway on Benson Shady Grove Avenue near 280th Street.
Sheriff’s Deputies, Fire Rescue and EMS were immediately dispatched.

According to the investigation, a 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by 80-year-old Marvin Wayne Andrews of Vinton, Iowa, was traveling northbound on Benson Shady Grove Avenue when a deer entered the roadway. Andrews struck the deer and lost control, striking a bridge guardrail and overturning the motorcycle.

The first arriving Sheriff’s Deputy attempted life saving measures until EMS arrived but Andrews was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

This accident remains under investigation.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Brandon Fire Department, Jesup Ambulance Service and Buchanan County Medical Examiner Investigator.
